January started with several Hallfield players attending a brace of chess coaching days organised by the Warwickshire Chess Association for county players or prospective county players.

The British Team Chess Challenge
This was good preparation for The British Team Chess Challenge Zonal competition at Blue Coat on 18th January where, although we were missing one of our top players, we placed second to a ferociously strong St Paul’s team who had travelled all the way from the banks of the Thames to the Midlands when they were unable to play in their local event at Westminster due to the event being full. Well done to Krish, Arnav, Aarav and Jasper.
Under 13 Schools Chess League
The local U13 schools chess league held their third event of the season on 24th January with 18 teams taking part full of Yr7 and Yr8 players….except for Hallfield who had Yr5 players (Krish, Handuo and Jasper) and Yr6 players (Aarav and Arnav). This was the blitz event where each game usually only took about 10 minutes or less. We finished a creditable 3rd place behind King Edwards School and King Edwards Aston. Our top scorer was Krish on 5/6 on board one (playing the best players from the other schools).

Warwick Junior Individual Chess Event
The Warwick Junior individual chess event was held on Saturday 1st February at Bishop Vesey’s Grammar School and we had several players taking part. In the B section Aariyan, after just being promoted to this section, was our top scorer with 3/5. Aariyan goes from strength to strength and seems to improve with every event. In the A section Krish and Handuo, our top two players, finished joint first in a very tough field, a brilliant performance.
National Primary Schools Championship
Our final outing during this half term was the zonal stage of the National Primary Schools Championship at Nottingham High on Sunday 9th February. We entered two teams in the U9s and one in the U11s. Our U9 B team of James, Shray, Declan, Aoife, Jacob and Kenenna played magnificently to finish second just behind the winners, our A team of Anthony, Aariyan, Alex, Roshan and Zain. The U11 team performed just as well despite missing one of our regular players, finishing first in their age group with Krish, Handuo, Aarav, Arnav and Pavan all winning the majority of their games. Top scorers were Alex and Shray in the U9 event with a 100% win rate and Handuo and Pavan in the U11s with 5.5/6 each. The semifinal of this event will take place in Nottingham in June.
