In the year we were founded, 1879, Thomas Edison invented the electric light bulb, and Queen Victoria was the British Monarch!
Hallfield School – or as it was known then, Kingsland House School – was founded by Mr Nowers and Mr Pughe. Within a year, the name was changed to ‘Edgbaston High School for Boys’. Just 19 boys entered the school in its first term, followed by another dozen who joined in June and September.
A few facts about Hallfield’s history…
- Hallfield pupils were evacuated to Denstone College in Staffordshire countryside during the Second World War, where they spent four terms.
- In the 60s, female staff members were addressed as ‘Please’ instead of their name! If a boy made a request, he would say ‘Please, Please’ and afterwards, ‘Thank you, Please’!
- The Allday Cup – presented annually to the boy chosen by his ‘comrades’ as the best sportsman in the school – commemorates Lieutenant Stanley Owen Allday, who was killed in action in France in 1915. He was a Hallfield pupil from 1906-1911.
- The Derry Bowl – presented annually to the girl chosen by her peers for her good sportsmanship and encouragement to others – was awarded to the school by the parents of the first girl at Hallfield in 1995, Amelia Derry.
We always enjoy hearing from past pupils, parents and teachers. Please contact our Alumni and Development Officer, Kat de Polo on KdePolo@hallfieldschool.co.uk to share your memories or arrange a time to come back to school and have a look around.
