Day 1

Our Seniors and Year 6 pupils kicked off their Icelandic adventure with an early start (at 2am), setting off with Mr Morrow, Mrs Raffermati and Mr Wright. After a smooth journey to Luton Airport, they enjoyed breakfast before boarding their flight to Keflavik International Airport.

Upon arrival, the group wasted no time diving into Iceland’s incredible experiences. They made unforgettable memories whale watching in Reykjavik, marvelling at the breathtaking scenery and spotting majestic marine life. The excitement of the day was followed by a well-earned evening meal at Hotel Hellishólar, where they enjoyed a warm welcome and a chance to relax after their long journey.

With plenty more adventures ahead, everyone was ready for a good night’s rest before exploring more of Iceland’s natural wonders!

Day 2

Day Two began with a hearty breakfast, preparing our Year 6 and Senior pupils for another incredible day of exploration. Their first stop was the Lava, Volcano, and Earthquake Centre in Hvolsvöllur, where they learned about Iceland’s powerful natural forces, including volcanic eruptions, shifting tectonic plates, and the country’s ever-changing landscape.

Next, they travelled to the breathtaking Seljalandsfoss waterfall, where they had the chance to admire the stunning cascade plunging from towering cliffs. After taking in its beauty, the adventure continued passing Dyrhólaey, a dramatic rocky headland with sheer cliffs and a wave-carved arch, offering spectacular coastal views.

The group then arrived in the charming village of Vík for a well-earned lunch before heading to the famous Black Sand Beach. Here, they marvelled at the striking contrast of the dark volcanic sands against the roaring Atlantic waves and admired the towering Reynisdrangar sea stacks, which rise an incredible 66 meters above the ocean.

The day concluded with a visit to the magnificent Skógafoss waterfall, one of Iceland’s most iconic cascades. With its powerful flow and misty spray, it was a breathtaking sight to end an unforgettable day of adventure.

Filled with awe and excitement from the day’s experiences, the group returned to the hotel, eager for more Icelandic wonders to come!

Day 3

Day Three was a busy and exciting one! After enjoying a hearty breakfast and preparing packed lunches, the group checked out of the hotel and set off on the famous Golden Circle Tour.

Their first stop was the Hellisheiði Geothermal Power Plant, where they learned how Iceland harnesses its natural geothermal energy to power homes and industries. This fascinating visit provided insight into the country’s sustainable energy solutions.

Next, they traveled to Þingvellir National Park, a site of incredible geological and historical significance. As the location of the world’s oldest democratic parliament, founded in 930 AD, it holds a special place in Iceland’s history. Pupils also explored the dramatic rift valley, standing between the Eurasian and North American tectonic plates, a rare and awe-inspiring experience!

The adventure continued at The Great Geysir, the famous hot spring that lent its name to geysers worldwide. While Geysir itself is now mostly inactive, they witnessed the spectacular Strokkur geyser, which erupts approximately every 10 minutes, sending boiling water up to 30 meters into the air!

Next, they visited Gullfoss, the breathtaking Golden Waterfall, known as one of the most impressive in Europe. The sheer power and beauty of the cascading water left everyone in awe.

To end the day on a perfect note, the group was fortunate to visit the Secret Lagoon—a natural hot spring. After a long day of sightseeing, the children relaxed and rejuvenated in the soothing geothermal waters, making for a truly unforgettable and well-deserved treat!

Day 4

Day Four began with a hearty breakfast at the group’s accommodation before setting off for another exciting day of exploration.

Their first stop was the Gunnuhver Geothermal Area, home to Iceland’s largest mud pool, a 20-meter-wide (65 ft) cauldron of violently boiling earth. Unlike other geothermal areas, the groundwater here is 100% seawater, creating a unique geothermal landscape. The steaming ground, colored by vibrant mineral deposits, reaches temperatures of over 300°C (570°F), so pupils made sure to stick to the designated trails while admiring the incredible scenery.

Next, the group visited the Reykjanes Lighthouse, standing proudly on a rugged coastal cliff. According to local stories, the lighthouse was built by sailors’ wives to help guide their husbands safely home—a touching tribute to Iceland’s deep maritime heritage.

One of the day’s most fascinating stops was the Bridge Between Continents, where pupils had the rare experience of standing between the Eurasian and North American tectonic plates. At the midway point of the footbridge, they found a plaque inscribed with Midlína – “In the footsteps of the gods”, marking this extraordinary geological divide. Stepping between two continents was a truly unforgettable moment!

After leaving the bridge, the group headed to Reykjavik, where they took a scenic walk through Iceland’s vibrant capital. They visited two cathedrals, taking in the stunning architecture and history, before enjoying some well-deserved shopping.

With their incredible Icelandic adventure coming to an end, the group reflected on a journey filled with breathtaking landscapes, powerful natural forces, rich history, and unforgettable experiences!

Day 5

The final day of the incredible Icelandic adventure began with checking out of the hotel and making the journey to Keflavik International Airport. After days filled with breathtaking landscapes, powerful natural wonders, and unforgettable experiences, our Year 6 and Senior pupils boarded their flight and returned safely to the UK.

This trip has been an amazing journey of discovery, from standing between tectonic plates to witnessing geysers erupt, exploring glaciers, waterfalls, and volcanic landscapes, and even relaxing in geothermal pools. The memories made will last a lifetime, and we’re sure everyone will be sharing stories of their Icelandic adventure for years to come!
