Understanding the 13+ pathway

Back in 2020 Hallfield launched Hallfield Seniors – Year 7 & 8. In less than 5 years we have gone from five pupils, to two separate form groups and a cohort of leavers that have gone onto some of the UK’s most renowned and prestigious schools at Year 9.

We have always been firm advocates of the 13+ pathway, communicating the endless benefits of keeping your child in a prep setting for longer. But don’t take our word for it. Below are a selection of videos featuring representatives from Eton College, Rugby and Bromsgrove School who delve into why a 13+ pathway is an excellent option for educating any child.

Watch now to gain holistic insight into the 13+ pathway and impartial view on why Hallfield Seniors could be the best decision you make for your child.

Bromsgrove School on why 13+?

As an educator who has experienced working in both the independent and state sector, Mr Mike Marie is a staunch believer that prep schools are trail blazers in protecting children from the issues experienced by adolescents in 11+ schools. He believes they provide an environment for children to flourish, lead and develop both academically and socially in readiness for Year 9.

Why Prep Over Grammar for Years 7 & 8?

While grammar schools offer strong academics, prep schools and boarding options provide a more personalised and nurturing environment, especially during Years 7 and 8. Small class sizes and close pastoral care ensure children receive tailored support, allowing them to thrive both academically and emotionally.

At places like Eton, Bromsgrove and Rugby School, the boarding experience from 13+ fosters a family-like community where children are well-supported and closely connected. Pastoral measures ensure that staff stay in touch with each child’s needs, creating a strong foundation for success.

Tailored support for growth

Prep schools offer bespoke guidance and personalised teaching, ensuring that every child develops at their own pace. By Year 9, they’ve had two extra years to explore leadership roles, refine social skills, and discover their strengths, leaving them better prepared for life at senior school.

Confidence for the senior school transition

Transitioning to senior school in Year 9 often results in a smoother and more confident shift, as pupils enter as part of a larger intake. This minimises the potential challenges of starting at a younger age and maximises their readiness to embrace new opportunities.
